chocolate dipped french macaroon

that’s what the sign said and next to it, the price: $1.85.

i went to alderman library and sit here still, but the story begins before this time of sitting. before i sat, i went to the library’s cafe to satisfy my omnipresent sugar craving. i was distraught to find that the froyo machine was broken - like, wtf. fortunately, i was, at the time, more than easily assuaged by the presence of what claimed to be a chocolate dipped french macaroon.

*brief anecdote/explanation on the history of my affair with macaroons: i’ve developed an affinity for macaroons, particularly after the gossip girl episode in which blair indulges in a variety of macaroons in the bathtub. inspired by blair waldorf - of all people, i know, i’m embarrassed for myself too - i ate my first macaroon in new york. i thought i died and was having play dates with jesus in heaven. my sister and best friend are witnesses to this earth-shattering moment.

anyway, my initial reaction at the cafe: “MACAROON?! wooohooooo wheeee yippeee hurrah huzzah awww yeah! BEST DAY EVAR!!!!!!!!!!!!” and suddenly, the broken froyo machine became a very trivial fact of life. i was a happy little camper who paid the dollar eighty-five and walked away with a goofy smile on my face, a little too excited at the prospect of consuming sugar.

although i wish i was, i am not a baked goods connoisseur. i’m just a college student living my life. but this college student has taste buds. so when i bit into the macaroon, the kind of thoughts that ran through my mind were akin to that of one’s mind when he/she drinks water, expecting sprite. as the dusty texture and the sickly sweet taste crumbled in my mouth and made its way down my esophagus, my brain was telling me, no, nonononononNO. the revelation itself was altogether just too much to handle. in short, i am disappointed and once again, distraught.

alderman library cafe’s macaroons taste like cardboard.
